February tradition-- Ringed Brent Geese

It becoming a february tradition that I find a Ringed Brent Goose at Clahane.

This bird was among a small flock of !8 birds present this morning on the  reef.

I send these sightings into Graham Mcewaine of the Brent Geese reasearch group and we should get a bit of info later on

Ringed Brent Goose

A ringed Brent Goose was among a small flock grazing on the slipway at Ballyvaughan Harbour. 

I sent the sighting in to Graham McElwaine of The Irish Brent Goose and he was kind enough to send me back a little info :

1st ringed in Iceland on 16/05/2015, being observed each year in October returned to Ireland at Strangford lough and has been recorded in winter within Galway bay now over 4 times.

I fine looking bird too.

The One legged Ringed Sanderling

Ive been following Sanderlings at Seafield now for over a decade and had kept a photo record of the ringed birds till a hard drive collapse this year.
This bird was on Quilty beach today showing the same tag as in a post I published in 2012  but now missing a right foot.,,,did the right leg once have a red/blue rings ??

A Brent Goose : A piece of its History

While at Clahane today there was a flock of 42 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, one of which I noticed was Colour ringed.I forwarded the photo and sighting to the Irish Brent Geese research group, and as usual you receive an interesting piece of info .

The bird 39LY was 1st ringed 19/5/2006 in SW Iceland.Trending to arrive for winter in october via Stragford lough ..moves south, mainly spending its winters mostly  in the Tralee ,Kerry area,also seen in Clare at Bartra in march 2008 and Seafield in 2009and 2012.

Some good birding is to be had around 4 km-wide Dungarvan Bay, with Spoonbill ,Little Egret at the rivermouths,and thousands of Brent geese on the grass pastures,Choughs and Black redstart patrol the hightide shorelline.Its a busy day

Purple Sandpipers arrival

Purple Sandpipers have been arriving on our coast this week , joining juvenile Turnstones on the safety of the reefs at hightide Seafield

While at Shannon airport lagoon , i met Phillip Brennon of the BTO as he was ringing Sedge warblers
Some things can make a day, specialy when you least expect it.
